Virgo and LIGO experiments changed the history of science twice: first, when they measured for the first time the gravitational waves in 2015, discovery that was awarded with the 2017 Nobel prize for physics, then, when, on August 17th, 2017, they were able to detect the signals produced by a binary neutron star. This kind of binary star, composed by two extremely dense objects made only by neutrons, collapsing\u00a0 becomes a single object that emits gamma rays and visible light. The radiation produced by these strange objects were never detected before. In August 2017 Virgo and LIGO were able to localize the position of the gravitational wave source with such a precision that all the telescopes of the world were able to point a very narrow region of the sky. This discovery marked the beginning of a new era in the history of astronomy, the era of multi-messenger astronomy. For the first time an astrophysical event was seen at the same time by completely different instruments, each one measuring a different signal \u2013 in other words, message \u2013 coming from the source: interferometers, gamma and X-ray detectors, radio and optical telescopes. Whether you are detecting gravitational waves or measuring colliding particles, the control room is where all the magic happens! Here all the troubles, successes, joy and despair of the experimental physicist life are concentrated. The improvement process that takes a big experiment to the performance required in order, for example, to detect gravitational waves is called \u2018commissioning\u2019. The detector is not like a commercial device that is guaranteed to work as expected after you have mounted it, installed, connected and turned on. When all the components of the detector are installed and tested the instrument essentially does not work. You need to work months or even years in order to see the detector starting to work properly.<\/p>\n

The idea of the multi-messenger control room is to make all the data coming live from several experiments involved in multi-messenger astronomy (VIRGO, KM3Net, Auger, Antares, AMS) available to the visitors of the exhibition in a single room. The setup, simply made with a set of monitors and small computers called Raspberry PI, was shown for the first time in the Saraceno\u2019s work Algo-r(h)i(y)thms, part of the \u2018On Air\u2019 exhibition at Palais de Tokyo in Paris.<\/p>\n

Virgo and LIGO hanno cambiato la storia della scienza due volte: prima, quando hanno misurato le onde gravitazionali per la prima volta nel 2015, scoperta che \u00e8 stata premiata con il premio Nobel per la fisica 2017, poi, quando, il 17 Agosto 2017, hanno osservato il segnale prodotto da una stella binaria di neutroni.\u00a0 Questo tipo di stella binaria, costituita da due oggetti estremamente densi fatti solo di neutroni, collassando diventa un singolo oggetto che emette raggi gamma e luce visibile. La radiazione prodotta da questi strani oggetti non era mai stata rivelata prima. Nell\u2019Agosto del 2017 Virgo e LIGO sono stati in grado di localizzare la posizione della sorgente di onde gravitazionali con una tale precisione da consentire di puntare i telescopi di tutto il mondo in una regione estremamente ridotta del cielo.<\/p>\n

Questa scoperta ha segnato l\u2019inizio di una nuova era nella storia dell\u2019astronomia, l’era dell’astronomia multi-messenger. Per la prima volta un evento astrofisico \u00e8 stato visto allo stesso tempo da strumenti completamente differenti, ognuno dei quali misura un segnale (o in altre parole, messaggio) diverso proveniente da un\u2019unica sorgente: interferometri, rivelatori di raggi gamma, di raggi X, telescopi ottici e radio.<\/p>\n

Sia che tu stia rilevando onde gravitazionali o misurando particelle in collisione, la sala di controllo \u00e8 dove avviene tutta la magia! Qui si concentrano tutti i problemi, i successi, la gioia e la disperazione della vita di molti fisici sperimentali. Il processo di miglioramento che porta un grande esperimento alle prestazioni richieste, ad esempio, per rilevare le onde gravitazionali, \u00e8 chiamato ‘commissioning’. Un rilevatore non \u00e8 come un dispositivo commerciale che deve necessariamente funzionare come previsto dopo averlo montato, collegato ed acceso. Quando tutti i componenti del rivelatore sono installati e testati lo strumento \u00e8 essenzialmente inutile. \u00c8 necessario lavorare mesi o addirittura anni per vedere il rilevatore iniziare a funzionare correttamente.<\/p>\n

L’idea della sala di controllo multi-messaggero \u00e8 quella di rendere disponibili ai visitatori della mostra, in un’unica stanza, una serie di segnali in diretta provenienti da diversi esperimenti coinvolti nell\u2019astronomia multi-messenger (VIRGO, KM3Net, Auger, Antares, AMS). La configurazione, semplicemente realizzata con una serie di monitor e computer modulari (Raspberry PI o unit\u00e0 Thinlinc), \u00e8 stata mostrata per la prima volta nell\u2019opera Algo-r(h)i(y)thms dell\u2019artista argentino Tom\u00e1s Saraceno. Questo lavoro \u00e8 stato parte della mostra ‘On Air’ organizzata al Palais de Tokyo di Parigi nell\u2019Ottobre 2018.<\/p>\n
