Roger Malina

is an artscience researcher, astronomer, editor and educator. He obtained his BS in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his PhD in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. His UTD ArtSciLab focuses on research that involves close collaboration between scientists and artists, in particular developing data exploration, data performance and transdisciplinary research and apprenticeships. The lab also carries out research in experimental publishing and curating in collaboration with MIT Press and Leonardo/ISAST and OLATS. He is former director of the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence (OAMP) and was a mem-ber of its observational cosmology group, which carries out investigations on dark matter and dark energy. He is the Executive Editor of the Leonardo Publications at MIT Press, including the new arteca.mit.edu, art-science-technology aggregator platform. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and the Ars Electronica Golden Nika for collective work through Leonardo.

E’ un ricercatore artistico-scientifico, astronomo, editore ed educatore. Ha ottenuto la laurea in fisica al Massachusetts Institute of Technology nel 1972, e il suo dottorato in Astronomia all’Università della California, Barkeley. Il suo ArtSciLab della UTD (University of Texas at Dallas) orbita intorno alla ricerca che implica la stretta collaborazione di scienziati e artisti che sviluppano l’esplorazione dati, le loro prestazioni nonché la ricerca e l’apprendi- stato interdisciplinare. Il laboratorio conduce anche ricerche sperimentali, pubblicate e curate in collaborazione con The MIT Press e Leonardo Publications /ISAST e OLATS. È anche l’ex direttore generale dell’Osservatorio Astronomico di Marsiglia-Provenza (OAMP), per l’appunto, ed è stato membro del suo gruppo di cosmologia osservativa che conduce ricerche sulla materia e l’energia oscura. È caporedattore di Leonardo Publications presso la MIT Press, nonché dell’arteca.mit.edu la piattaforma aggregativa sull’arte, la scienza e la tecnologia. Gli è stato conferito un Dottorato honoris causa dall’Università Politecnica di Valencia, e gli è stata consegnata la Golden Nika del premio Ars Electronica per il lavoro collettivo condotto tramite Leonardo.
